Rachel Munn SBA

Botanical Artist

Having been brought up in central London, I married a farmer and moved to Sussex soon after. Following the busy years of bringing up 4 children, helping my husband with the farm and working in our local community, I became a keen gardener. Garden design and plant courses followed – not to mention Open University geology courses. We have created a stunning peaceful retreat in the garden of our Sussex farmhouse.

An Oxford Zoology graduate with no formal art training, I tried coloured pencil botanical illustration several years ago at workshops with the eminent botanical artist, Ann Swan. My introduction to botanical painting was a few years previous to this, in classes with the botanical illustrator, Moya Davern, RHS Gold Medallist. This was an inspirational introduction to both watercolours and botanical art. I now concentrate on coloured pencil work but have recently enjoyed experimenting with pen & ink.

Botanical art complements my passion for the flowers and vegetables we grow, many of which I paint and is helped by my enquiring scientific mind and attention to detail. Barks have become a particular favourite, the inspiration coming from wandering through the woodlands on the farm.

I exhibit at The Society of Botanical Artists Annual Exhibition held in April or May & at Florum near Sevenoaks in September.

I was awarded full membership of the Society of Botanical Artists in 2009 and awarded a Certificate of Botanical Merit at the SBA Exhibition in 2011 for 'Cherry Bark'. I was awarded the Presidents Award for 'Acanthus' at the 2013 SBA Exhibition.
